March on the Camino Francés presents mild conditions overall, though early in the season with considerable day-to-day variability. Daytime temperatures range from around 5°C near the Pyrenees to nearly 20°C in Galicia, so expect steady warming as you progress eastward through the stages. Nights remain cold, frequently dropping below freezing, particularly at higher elevations and in the northern regions. The temperature gradient is significant—Navarre averages just 11°C during the day while Galicia reaches 15°C, a substantial difference across the 780-kilometre route.

Rain is the dominant weather pattern for March pilgrims. Rainfall is frequent rather than heavy, with Galicia experiencing wet conditions on virtually every day and Castille and León on approximately two-thirds of stages. Expect regular showers and overcast skies rather than continuous downpours. Wind adds another layer of exposure, with gusts exceeding 60 kilometres per hour possible, especially on ridgelines and open plateaus where shelter is minimal.

Elevation changes compound these challenges. The climb to Foncebadón at 1426 metres brings noticeably colder temperatures and exposed conditions on the high passes. Nights at altitude drop sharply, sometimes below freezing even when daytime highs are moderate. For these reasons, pack waterproof outer layers you can access easily, start walking early to avoid afternoon wind intensification, and maintain extra insulation despite daytime mildness—the combination of cold nights, frequent rain, and exposure makes layering essential for comfort and safety.
