October on the Camino Francés brings mild daytime temperatures ranging from 9°C to 27°C, but the character changes significantly as you progress inland. The route begins warm in the foothills of Nouvelle-Aquitaine, with daytime highs around 27°C, but temperatures decline steadily through Navarre and La Rioja before dropping noticeably in Castille and León, where you'll experience cooler days averaging 17°C. By the time you reach Galicia in the final stages, expect the coolest conditions, with daytime temperatures around 16°C and night temperatures dipping to 2–3°C. This cooling trend reflects both latitude and elevation gain.

Rainfall increases dramatically as you move west. The initial stages see minimal precipitation, but Castille and León becomes substantially wetter, with rain expected on roughly sixteen of seventeen stages. Galicia receives steady rainfall on nearly every stage, totalling 76mm over eight days. Wind gusts frequently reach 60km/h, particularly on exposed ridgelines and the higher passes. The approach to Foncebadón at 1426 metres is especially exposed, where wind combined with lower temperatures can create harsh conditions.

Higher elevations introduce significant cooling, with night temperatures falling sharply at altitude. Start early each day to reach shelter before darkness and cold combine, particularly from mid-October onward. Waterproof layering is essential throughout, not optional; many walkers underestimate how wet and cold Galicia becomes.
