Weather Overview

March along the Camino del Norte is decidedly cool, with daytime temperatures ranging from roughly 11°C to 20°C and nights often dropping to between 3°C and 11°C. The route gradually warms as you move east to west: the Basque Country is the chilliest at around 14°C during the day, while Galicia at the western end reaches nearly 17°C. Despite this modest warmth gain, the climate remains firmly in winter's grip, particularly at dawn and dusk when you will need insulation against the chill.

Rain dominates the forecast across nearly every stage of the walk. Expect frequent, persistent showers rather than dramatic downpours—most days along the route will see some precipitation, with the Basque Country and Asturias experiencing rain on seven to nine days out of their respective stages. Wind gusts can reach 66 kilometres per hour, especially on exposed ridge sections and coastal areas where the Bay of Biscay's influence creates particularly blustery conditions. This combination of rain and wind can strip warmth rapidly, even when temperatures appear moderate.

Elevation changes are modest but cumulative, with the highest point reaching only 504 metres near Sobrado. However, the passes and ridges expose walkers to stronger winds and colder air, and nights at any altitude will feel decidedly cold. Start early each day to maximize daylight and avoid setting up camp in deteriorating evening conditions. Layering is essential—carry a reliable waterproof shell, thermal base layers, and a fleece or insulating mid-layer that you can adjust throughout the day as conditions and effort levels shift.
