May brings mild to warm conditions across the Camino Francés, though expect significant variation along your journey. Days generally range from thirteen to twenty-seven degrees Celsius, but temperatures shift noticeably as you progress eastward and gain elevation. The northern regions starting in the Pyrenees near Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port remain cool, while Galicia in the northwest warms considerably, with daytime averages reaching nearly twenty-two degrees. Nights remain cool throughout, dropping to around five degrees at altitude, so thermal layering remains essential even as days warm.

Rainfall occurs on roughly half the days you will walk, though showers tend to be moderate rather than heavy. Castille and León, where you spend most of your journey, experiences the most frequent precipitation with rain expected on two of every three days. Wind gusts can reach fifty kilometres per hour, particularly on exposed ridgelines and high passes like those approaching Foncebadón at fourteen hundred metres, where wind chill will noticeably reduce perceived temperature.

Elevation creates the most dramatic weather shifts. High passes cool significantly at night and expose you to stronger winds when conditions turn. Plan to start early each morning while conditions remain calmer, and carry reliable waterproof gear rather than hoping to time around showers. Your thermal layers will be equally valuable at dawn in the mountains and during cool, wet afternoons in the meseta plains.
