February on the Camino Francés is genuinely cold, with daytime temperatures ranging from 8°C to 14°C depending on location and conditions. Nights regularly dip below freezing across most of the route, occasionally reaching -2°C or lower at higher elevations. The mildest section is Nouvelle-Aquitaine near the Spanish border, where daytime temperatures average around 12°C, while Navarre and Galicia tend toward the cooler end of the spectrum at approximately 11°C to 12°C.

Rainfall is frequent and persistent rather than torrential, particularly in Castille and León and Galicia where you should expect wet conditions on roughly two out of every three days. Precipitation totals around 107mm for the month overall, distributed unevenly—Galicia receives the most moisture, with all eight stages experiencing rain on average. Wind gusts can reach 63 kilometres per hour, making exposed ridgelines and high plateaus genuinely uncomfortable even when temperatures seem manageable.

Elevation compounds these challenges considerably. Foncebadón at 1426 metres will be noticeably colder than lower sections, and nights at altitude feel significantly harsher. High passes expose you to wind that accelerates cooling. Begin each day before dawn to maximize daylight for safe passage through exposed terrain, and carry layered waterproof clothing rather than relying on a single heavy garment—wet insulation becomes dangerous when temperatures remain near freezing throughout the day.
